If your child takes on your surname before you and your girlfriend get married, it might result in further confusion afterwards. It might be better for your child to keep his mother's surname, then you can apply for legitimization at the City Hall after you and your girlfriend get married.

Now if you prefer for your child to take on your middle name as his surname, you might have to petition for a name change first, before you get married. Again, this is to avoid confusion later.
