Oprah Winfrey Show to go off the air

CHICAGO (AP) - "The Oprah Winfrey Show," an iconic broadcast that grew over two decades into a daytime television powerhouse and the foundation of a multibillion-dollar media empire, will end its run in 2011 after 25 seasons on the air, Winfrey's production company said Thursday night.

Winfrey plans to announce the final date for her show during a live broadcast on Friday, Harpo Productions Inc. said, bringing an end to what has been television's top-rated talk show for more than two decades, airing in 145 countries worldwide and watched by an estimated 42 million viewers a week in the U.S. alone.

A Harpo spokeswoman declined to comment Thursday on Winfrey's future plans except to say that "The Oprah Winfrey Show" will not move to cable television.

Winfrey is widely expected to start up a new talk show on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, a much-delayed joint venture with Discovery Communications Inc. that is expected to debut in 2011. OWN is to replace the Discovery Health Channel and will debut in some 74 million homes. An OWN spokeswoman declined comment Thursday.....Read more

Anti-Child Pornography Act 0f 2009 Signed!

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - President Arroyo has signed Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 which seeks to make Filipino children less vulnerable to the illicit trade by imposing stiff penalties on anyone found guilty of any form of involvement in child pornography and enjoining private entities to help in the effort, according to local media Wednesday.

Republic Act 9775, which Arroyo signed on Tuesday, defines child pornography as "any representation, whether visual, audio, or written combination thereof, by electronic, mechanical, digital, optical, magnetic or any other means, or a child engaged or involved in real or simulated explicit sexual activities."

It provides that a victim of child pornography shall be considered as a victim of a violent crime, and metes out penalties ranging from mayor to reclusion perpetual and a fine of 300,000 to 5 million pesos (6438 to 107,296 U.S. dollars).

The new law criminalists hiring, employing, using, persuading, inducing or coercing a child to participate in the production or any form of child pornography; and any form of involvement in creating any form of child pornography.

It also criminalists publishing, offering, transmitting, selling, distributing, broadcasting, advertising, promoting, exporting or importing any form of child pornography; possessing any form of child pornography with the intent of selling, distributing, publishing or broadcasting them; and possessing and willfully accessing any form of child pornography.

The law also specifies the duties and responsibilities of internet service providers, mall owners and operators or lessors of business establishments, and internet content hosts to report any commission of any form of child pornography in their respective areas.

Here are some things that this law will try to do:

1. ban depictions of child rape, or underage sexual intercourse in literary works.
2. ban drawn, adult-oriented comics and images whose characters look under 18.
3. proliferate the idea of thought-crimes (ie. somebody having access or in possession of drawn pornography will likely be a molester/rapist)
4. ban the sale of imported books which contains suggestive and sexual content involving children.

Well, I haven't read the law yet, but these are some of the things this new law is up to. I have been wondering, why go with such a vague description of 'child pornography'? Under this definition, a lot of books will be banned, and even the Christian Bible will have to be banned. This will also give them the right to gain access to your personal information and computer, and if they find 'child pornography', you will be sued for them. That's already invasion of privacy. This will also limit writers' artistic freedom.

There are lots to be said about the red clause, seriously.

He was scheduled to make a manifestation in Wednesday�s Senate session, but a lack of quorum prevented him from speaking out.

�I would have manifested that I would have to withdraw my signature from Senate Resolution 1472,� Estrada told reporters.

The resolution, signed by 12 senators, is absolving Villar of unethical conduct arising from his alleged pushing of the C-5 road extension project.

Estrada admitted being upset by speculations he cleared Villar in exchange for being a guest senatorial candidate of the NP.

�That is totally untrue. That has nothing to do with my signature with the rest of the resolution,� he said.

Estrada lamented the violation of the previous agreement to release the resolution only after the Senate has come up with the results of the Villar ethics case.

Asked whom did he have an agreement with, Estrada said it was �Senator Villar himself.�

Other signatories to the resolution were Villar, Aquilino Pimentel, Alan Peter Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Gregorio Honasan II, Joker Arroyo, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Ramon Revilla Jr., Francis Pangilinan, and Villar's runningmate Loren Legarda.
