Any hotspots you want to mention? Care to share where you hang out to connect wirelessly for free? Discovered any lately? A hotspot is a public location where Wi-Fi (or WIRELESS) Internet access can be obtained. Hotspots are increasingly found in airports, hotels, coffee shops, public libraries and other places where business people tend to congregate. Do you know any areas in your neighborhood, cities, towns, restaurants, other businesses and public places where FREE WIFI services are available?

Stateside

Public libraries here provide free WIFI connexion. Panera restaurants and so many more (chain & non-chain) also have free WIFI services. Mickey D's only offer cheap WiFi access - they need to be told to get with the program, preferably FREE! I think today starts the free 2-hour WIFI access being offered by Starbucks in the US. Some people told me that they were able to get a WIFI connection while in the parking lot of Dairy Queen. I haven't tried that yet.

In Pinas

Definitely Gateway Mall in Cubao is one giant hotspot. To sit down and cruise the internet, you have to go to their food court. I also read that the whole shopping area in Cubao is also a ginormous hotspot - verify pls.

Araneta Center - My favorite place to hang out is Araneta Center specially Gateway Mall. They have free Wifi access on every floor though there are days that their WIFI connection is down.

Robinson's Malls - The Taste Buds area in all Robinson's mall offers free Wifi connection though a bit slow but still great for browsing. Also, the newly opened Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Midtown Center has a free Wifi connection. I checked out the connection and the name is "globe" but I don't know how long its gonna be free.

If you're a Smart subscriber, you can subscribe to Airborne Access for Unlimited WIFI connection for only P99 per month. However, you have to go to the coffee shops that use Airborne Access, e.g. Figaro, Gloria Jean's Coffee, Mocha Blends, Mrs. Fields. I know their coffee is way too expensive. It is better to just pay for access rather than pay P300 for coffee. You can always just order a chocolate chip cookie.

Sa US, I know that all hotels, universities, airports and public libraries have free WiFi access. There are also certain cities which are WIFI zones.

The problem with this service is it lists both pay and free WIFI hotspots.

Here are other FREE WIFI hotspots:

San Francisco Coffee, BMW, Alabang (this is along Commerce Avenue, past Alabang Town Center when coming from Festival Mall). Good coffee, cheap food... only downside is that there are no power outlets... so you're limited to however long your battery will last.

Bo's Coffee Club in the Ayala Entertainment Center, in the Cebu Business Park.

Are you from Fairview? Well anyway, we used to live there. Burger King provides free WiFi connexion and they will even allow you to plug in your laptop using their own outlets. In the US, that's not allowed in any hotspot establishments. Have you tried their food court? The other restaurants there told me that they also have WIFI.

Free WIFI Surfing in Baguio City

All BK's are hotspots. Sa Camp John Hay merong hotspots (just see the list at the link at the very bottom of this message). There is a small building inside the camp that houses a string of fast food eateries. They have outdoor tables which you can eat on. They might have a WIFI connection there but I'm not so sure. Since all SM buildings are now in da ZONE you can probably go to their food court to get the free connection. If you can't get it there, go to Figaro at the mall. But I think that one is not free.

- Cafe Zola
This cafe is near the top of Session. It is an acronym for Zest of Life’s Abundance and not named after French novelist Emile Zola. I think it's a pizzeria & it's open 24 hours. It’s at the Patria building on Session Road, very near the entrance of Cathedral, it’s beside Porta Vaga near Mercury Drug. Cafe Zola is very near the POST OFFICE. They serve drinks, alcoholic beverages, coffee, milkshakes, pizzas, pastas and meals. And their WIFI is free for all. You could also plug your gadgets to their power outlets free of charge. Burnham Park is the first premier public park in the entire country to become an “e-tourism park” following the launching of a Free WiFi access at the park lake on March of last year (2008). There’s the risk of theft if you use your laptop in such a public and open area, though. It’s probably easier to access the hotspot using a cellphone or other more portable devices. Just make sure to protect yourself from robbers, secure your valuable gadgets. The city government announced that they will deploy more guards to keep the park safe and secure. Its present contingent of guards will be increased from six to 30 to provide better security for residents and visitors in the area. UPDATE:

A friend of mine just emailed me about the WIFI connection in Gateway Mall in Cubao. He said to delete it off our list. He said he tried to connect to several available WIFI nodes but to no avail. He said many of them are password-protected and the two that are available for free cannot connect to the internet. He also tried going to other locations within the food court area but still he was unsuccessful. Has anyone tried using the WIFI at Gateway? Can someone verify what my friend is claiming?

He also said that there is no free WIFI connection at the Ali Mall food court. Zip, nada.
