A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones series)
I can't believe there aren't any threads for this series yet.
Series Description from wikipedia (because I'm a lazy bum):
The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily upon a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses other races are introduced, such as the cold and menacing Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both races thought to be extinct by the people of the story. There are three principal storylines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war 15 years previously, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, all three storylines become increasingly interwoven and dependent on each other.
Written by George R.R. Martin, the series is projected for 7 books, though only 4 has been published and released. The fifth is scheduled to be released on July 12, 2011.
There is also an HBO series about the first book, titled "Game of Thrones" though I don't think it's shown in the Philippines because of the graphic violence and sex scenes.
I've been following the series though I had a really hard time finding the first two books before. It wasn't as popular back then as it is now because of the HBO series.
Thoughts and comments, anyone?

Yeah, the first book is hard to find. But I see a lot of copies of the second one here in Cebu though.
I'm a fan of the series too, and I've yet to read the book.
I really love and admire Martin's villains, so delicious, especially the Lannisters, particularly Joffrey.
Me and my friends who are fans of the series/books are planning a tabletop role-playing game based loosely on the series.

I've finished the first season of the HBO series Game Of Thrones. Am not reading the books yet because of the spoilers.
So far it's started off slow, but things get really interesting during the last three episodes. And since many of the set elements were leftovers from another fantasy movie (I forget which), the production has the potential to be epic.

Really? Wow, I'm surprised HBO is that cheap.

Me, I'm reading a book based on a season after the season ends. So I'm set to read A Game of Thrones now.
By the way, I noticed you italicized the series title. Is that treatment from the Chicago Manual of Style?

It really is hard to find. I first found the third book by random and bought it (the cover didn't say it was part of the series), so I was disappointed but still tried to read it. But I got hooked so I had to stop about 30+ pages in and decided I'm gonna find the first and second books first.
Grabe, it took me months and several bookstores para lang mahanap yun. haha.
btw, there is already a tabletop game based on the series. err.. it's a trading card game, actually. Also titled "Game of Thrones"

Yeah. At least HBO's 'borrowed' set was used well enough to give the show a large-scale feel, as opposed to Starz's Camelot. The creativity that went into the opening sequence's visuals and theme was also quite impressive for me.
As for characters, my favorite is Tyrion Lannister, that wily, impudent scoundrel. Close seconds are Khal Drogo, Daenerys Targaryen, and Arya Stark. And the development on Viserys Targaryen was epic!

I'll be waiting for the entire TV series to end first before reading up on it. I hope it doesn't end up hanging like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, though.
And no, I haven't read the Chicago Manual of Style yet; this is just the way I tend to present titles.

Well, in that case, I take back my criticism at HBO. Yeah, I admire people who exhaust all means before resorting to CGI.
But Camelot's great too, in my opinion. Too bad they canceled it due to conflicting schedules of cast members.

That actress playing Arya is bound to shine a lot soon. She reminds me of Dakota Fanning when she started, only more feisty. The actor who plays Bran Stark would likely shine too. Heard a lot of fans comparing him to a young DiCaprio.
The Tyrion actor has long been a favorite of mine. He would have been a great Mr. Big in the film Watchmen since he actually looks the part in the comics.

I supposed that's a good choice too since I heard they used material from the other books in the first season. And I also hope that it does not end up like Wheel of Time because Martin, not to speak ill, could end up like Jordan any day now. I mean, they are born only a month apart, and Martin still has to write two more books.

Yeah, no, there really are tabletop RPGs on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire on sale. But we're not using those, just basing on them.

Okay. So the fifth book was released last July 12. And I've been waiting for the release for YEARS.
So I went to Fully Booked to get one. Wah. Di ko makita. I went to the information desk to ask for it, and the lady said it's already SOLD OUT sa LAHAT NG STORES nila.
I asked if I could reserve one, tapos sabi niya HINDI NA SILA TUMATANGGAP NG RESERVATIONS FOR THAT PARTICULAR BOOK KASI SOBRANG DAMI nang nagpareserve.
Wah. I didn't think it would be THAT popular. I don't even know anyone personally (aside from my sister) who reads this book.
Uber fail. dapat pala nagpareserve nako neto months before...

HBO, of all companies, makes the TV series adaptation of the book series; and season 1 happens to be a damn good one; and you're expecting A Dance with Dragons to be only this popular?
There's probably not enough paper and ink left in planet Earth to meet the demand for all the books of the series!
By the way, we are in need of at least two players for our TV series creation game (with tabletop RPG rules for combat) to replace some who backed out. We plan on playing the game either by exchanging E-mails or posts in a forum thread (maybe here in Mukamo).
We expect to produce a script for a six-episode first season (including the pilot) that fits in continuity with the first season of the HBO TV show Game of Thrones. Obviously, we can only play minor characters from the first season (or if not included in the first season of the show or ever, from any book of the A Song of Ice and Fire series of books). We can play, however, original characters; but they should fit in with the fictional world of the books and the show. Actually, my first player (and only one so far) has decided to play Beric Dondarrion.
The game is expected to be slow as participants are not pressured to reply within a certain length of time.
I've trailed off enough.
Thanks.

I don't know about you, but I think watching a season before reading the book is more interesting and entertaining to me. I resisted reading the book while the first season went on. Now, I'm reading it. But I'm resisting reading the second book A Clash of Kings until the second season is over.

This is kinda OT but I'd still prefer reading the book first because watching the TV series sorta limits your creativity and imagination. I mean, the moment Ned is introduced in the book, you'll immediately picture him as Sean Bean. Thus, preventing you to concoct his image in your mind using the descriptions in the book.
And it's kinda fun watching the characters you imagine brought to life, ya?
