I once heard of a secondhand vibrator on sale. Hello Kitty pa.
Am not a fan of ukay-ukay shops, though I've purchased a few pieces from them several years ago. It used to be a novelty in Baguio, then they suddenly cropped up around the metro when business owners realized they could make easy money by selling off items from charity shops like Goodwill. That killed the novelty for me.
No to pre-owned appliances as well. I once bought a secondhand stereo component from a friend and even with much care on my part, it was busted within months. Since I'm spending good money for a good piece of equipment, I might as well get the best value for what my budget can offer. So brand new it is.
Now, I've restricted my secondhand purchases to books, jewelry, and furniture. Those items are much better with a little history.

I like "ukay-ukay".

I've never seen that there. I'm not a big fan of buying 2nd hand clothes at Goodwill stores or Salvation Army or St. Vincent de Paul and other Thrift stores. But some of my friends told me about a little shop in Chicago where the uber rich dump their barely worn designer clothes (the establishment is a known Catholic charity I think). I wouldn't mind checking that out. There are really very cheap clothes here in the U.S. For example, there are huge weekend flea markets (American version of our tiangge) selling cheap first hand clothes among other things. Then there are outlet malls, outlet brand stores here and off-price retail stores like Value City, Marshalls, TJMaxx, Burlington Coat Factory, Nordstrom Rack, Forever 21 and Ross for fashion and Ikea and HomeGoods for home furnishings. In Canada, they have Winners for fashion and Homesense for home furnishings, while in Europe, they have TKMaxx and Homesense. IKEA have stores in many countries too. Then there is the town of Secaucus, New Jersey, the outlet town. Then of course, there is Amazon, Big Lots and eBay online for more cheap alternatives. Let's also not forget that in America store sales are fantastic! I heard that the best ukay ukays are in Baguio. Someone told me that he buys 2nd hand clothes there and when I asked him how much he paid for his stateside denim pants he said P500. Not exactly cheap. At Centris tiangge on weekends they have some nice clothes for only P150. What I definitely like to buy 2nd hand are refurbished computers, non-electric tools (like wrenches, hammers, pliers, screw drivers, etc), power tools (from garage sales), gas lawn mowers, and collectors items (memorabilia like old tin can containers and other antiques).

Let me tell you about buying 2nd hand electronics such as cellphones, Nintendos such as 3DS, XLs and such, tablets, etc. Don't you guys ever use these while taking a crap? Some of you will deny it but I do it, my wife does and so my kids. So no, I will not buy a small used electronics stuffs just because of that reason. Doesn't matter if I know the seller or not.
As for used clothes, we donate clothes to Goodwill and Salvation almost every year. From what I heard, some of these are sent to the Philippines and gets sold as ukays. I really don't like this part - the main reason why people donate clothes is to help people in need. I understand the business model of Goodwill and Salvation. They resell these and the money goes to charity (I hope), it also creates local jobs. What isn't right is, if these stuffs goes to the wrong hands and are sold for profit.
Just my opinion.

Katulad mo Stevie (naks!

Charities are usually non-profits and the US government supports these by not taxing them. They don't have jurisdiction outside the US and I don't think there's a law against sending used clothes outside the country.
The problem is the "recipient". They are probably registered in the Philippines as charitable institutions so they can freely receive these. But these so-called institutions may have a wholesale warehouse that sells these to local business owners and turn them for profit.
I think this is both good and bad for Filipinos.
Good: for obvious reasons. An average Pinoy can purchase "imported" clothes at a price point, where an average Pinoy can afford. It also creates local jobs and possibly help our economy in some way.
The Bad: if donor countries discovers what we Pinoys do with these supposedly free-to-the-needy clothing, they'll probably stop sending them and will give bad rep to our country.
I still think these should be given away for free or if not, at least some of the profit should go to an actual charity.
By the way, I've seen my local Goodwill store sort a pile of donated clothes. The ones that they think won't be sold are dumped outside their store for anyone to take. A lot of these are taken by homeless people and families who can't afford to buy clothes.
PS: Thanks for adding me bro.
